Doc Star and the Railroad Years is mijn reconstructie van een verdwenen universum. Het onafgemaakte werk dat Doc Star tussen 1987 en 1994 achterliet, bleef in mij resoneren, alsof het vroeg om voltooid te worden.
De serie brengt schilderkunst, muziek en ontwerp samen in één conceptueel geheel. Het verhaal ontvouwt zich tussen 1879 en 1900 langs het Halve Zolenlijntje, een spoorlijn die als een scherpe snede door het Brabantse landschap liep.
In die omgeving vond ik een beeldtaal die past bij mijn manier van werken. Een vorm van realisme die meer laat voelen dan zien, met een spanning die doet denken aan spaghettiwesterns. Wat overblijft is een spoor van beelden en geluiden, als licht dat nog even blijft hangen nadat het is verdwenen.
Centraal staat het personage Silver Bullet. Terwijl ik hem langs de spoorlijn laat reizen, ontvouwt zich ook een innerlijke tocht, nauw verbonden met het maakproces zelf. Zijn weg door licht en donker, door stilte en onrust, opent een wereld die zich alleen toont aan wie er lang genoeg in blijft.
Wat werkelijk is en wat verbeelding, laat ik bewust in het midden. Ontmoetingen en beelden dienden zich aan alsof ze altijd al bestonden, wachtend om opnieuw zichtbaar te worden.
Fragmenten van een droom die nooit helemaal heeft bestaan, tot ik hem opnieuw vormgaf.

Doc Star and the Railroad Years is my reconstruction of a vanished universe. The unfinished work that Doc Star left behind between 1987 and 1994 kept resonating within me, as if it were asking to be completed.
The series brings painting, music and design
together into a single conceptual whole. The story
unfolds between 1879 and 1900 along the Halve Zolen Line, a railway that cut through the Brabant landscape like a sharp incision.
In that environment I found a visual language that fits the way I work. A form of realism that lets you feel more than it lets you see, carrying a tension reminiscent of spaghetti westerns. What remains is a trail of images and sounds, like light that lingers for a moment after it has disappeared.
At the center stands the character Silver Bullet. As I let him travel along the railway, an inner journey unfolds as well, one closely tied to the act of making itself. His
passage through light and dark, through silence and
unrest, opens a world that reveals itself only to those who stay in it long enough.
What is real and what is imagined, I deliberately leave unresolved. Encounters and images presented
themselves as if they had always existed, waiting to become visible again.
Fragments of a dream that never fully existed, until I shaped it anew.

A Four-Part Rock Odyssey
on Four Gatefold Albums
Doc Star and the Railroad Years is a semi-autobiographical masterpiece by Doc Star, blending historical and fictional elements within the framework of a concept album. During the 1980s, he worked on this four-part 'coming-of-age' project. However, due to Doc Star’s disappearance in 1994, he was never able to complete the series.
In early 2024, I obtained all rights to Doc Star's work, The Clouds of Death and A Cloud. That same year, I began completing the musical journey. Carefully restoring and reinterpreting the original material. As producer, I not only preserved Doc Star’s artistic vision, but also filled in the musical gaps he left behind: composing missing sections, refining unfinished arrangements, and weaving together the sonic narrative he never got to finish.
What emerges is not merely a tribute, but a resurrection. A fully realized concept album that bridges decades, genres, and generations. Doc Star and the Railroad Years is now complete, both musically and thematically, as it was always intended to be.
For the four gatefold covers, I created all the artwork. The paintings evoke the distinctive style and atmosphere of spaghetti westerns: vast landscapes, intense close-ups, and a slow, dramatic build-up of scenes. All of this is set against the haunting backdrop of the Langstraat railway line in the Netherlands, stretching from Lage Zwaluwe to ’s-Hertogenbosch also known as the Halvezolenlijntje railway (the “Half-Soles Line”, 1886–1987), nestled in the polder landscape.
The central figure of the albums is a growing boy nicknamed Silver Bullet. His emotional struggle with inner demons and his quest for the Path of the Soul form the core narrative across the four albums. Though he leads an outwardly normal life, his mind oscillates between manic euphoria and deep depression. In four episodes, his journey unfolds along the Half-sole Railway, where he gathers a group of heroes for an epic adventure filled with challenges, courage, and magic.
His story is a metaphor for following one’s dreams and discovering one’s true self. Along the way, he learns profound life lessons that help him grasp the meaning of his existence, while confronting and overcoming the social, economic, and religious obstacles that rises against him.
